Signs You Might Need an Eyelid Lift
An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove or reposition skin, fat, and/or muscle from the upper or lower eyelids. It is often chosen by individuals looking to rejuvenate their appearance or address functional issues related to aging or genetics.
Some of the most common signs indicating that patients may be good candidates for an eyelid lift include:
- Sagging or drooping upper eyelids
- Puffiness or “bags” under the eyes
- Obstructed vision due to drooping eyelids
- Constantly tired appearance despite adequate rest
- Difficulty applying makeup to the eyelid area due to excess skin
Evaluating Your Symptoms With Dr. Angela Hulsey
To determine if eyelid surgery is the right treatment based on your symptoms and cosmetic and functional goals, it’s essential to first consult with Dr. Hulsey. As a highly trained plastic surgeon specializing in facial procedures like blepharoplasty, she can craft a personalized treatment plan that best suits your needs, including strategies concerning the upper and lower eyelids.
When an Upper Blepharoplasty May be Right for You
The upper eyelid lift is performed on patients who are experiencing sagging or drooping upper eyelids that can affect their appearance or, in more severe cases, block their vision. If you’ve noticed that your eyelids hang over your eyes or if you constantly have to raise your eyebrows to see better, you may be a good candidate for an upper blepharoplasty.
During an upper eyelid lift, Dr. Hulsey carefully makes an incision in the natural fold of the upper eyelid. This gives her access to remove any excess skin and adjust or eliminate fat deposits, helping to achieve a smoother and more youthful look.
When a Lower Blepharoplasty is the Right Choice
Instead of (or in addition to) an upper blepharoplasty, some patients may benefit from a lower eyelid lift. There are two different versions of the lower blepharoplasty depending on your particular symptoms:
Transcutaneous Lower Blepharoplasty
This version of the lower eyelid lift is ideal for people with excess skin and fat under the eyes, which are creating puffiness or sagging. An incision is made on the outside of the lower eyelid, just beneath the lashes. Then, unnecessary skin is removed, and the fat tissue is either taken out or repositioned.
Transconjunctival Lower Blepharoplasty
This technique is used for patients who are primarily dealing with bags caused by fat deposits but don’t have a significant amount of loose skin. Here, the incision is made along the conjunctiva, located on the inside of the lower eyelid, meaning there is no visible scarring.
