The PRP procedure is safe for almost everyone, except those with clotting conditions that require blood thinners or those with other blood-related health issues.
What does the research say?
An analysis published in 2018 in the Journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reviewed 16 studies on the use of PRP for facial rejuvenation and found that researchers reported PRP helped rejuvenate aging facial skin by reducing wrinkles and improving volume, texture, and tone. It also found that PRP appears to be safe, with a low complication rate.
Why use PRP for skin and body rejuvenation?
PRP is used while microneedling the face, neck, décolletage, and body to stimulate collagen, tighten the skin, minimize pore size, improve skin texture, diminish scarring and stretch marks, and improve the appearance of fine lines/wrinkles. This is the ultimate anti-aging treatment.
When PRP is injected back into the skin layers it initiates a local stem cell response. In the weeks and months following treatment, these stem cells help to form new collagen structures and blood vessels, repair and regenerate damaged skin, and help slow and reverse the signs of aging, creating healthy skin that looks refreshed and rejuvenated. PRP has been shown to help fade darkness under the eyes, provide natural volume restoration, and even help with hair loss when injected into the scalp.
What will happen during the process?
During treatment, a member of our experienced and trained staff will draw blood from your arm. The small vial of blood will be placed and spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the plasma. This process concentrates the platelet count to about 4x the normal amount. The platelet-rich plasma is then applied topically or injected into the skin for treatment.
What should I expect immediately after treatment?
With each injection you will see a large amount of volume (of your own PRP) in the injection site. This disperses within a few hours, spreading like honey under the dermis. Sometimes bruising, swelling and redness at the injection site can occur and you may experience some tenderness at injection sites. However, these should dissipate within a few days following the procedure.
When to expect to see results?
Immediately after the procedure in St. Louis, the injected skin will feel tighter than usual, and lines/wrinkles will already be less visible. This degree of tightening will not last and the skin surface will return more to normal after four days. However, the PRP will be working under the surface of the skin to make new cells and improve the subsurface layers of the skin. This is not an immediate process and the pronounced effects occur about 4-6 weeks after the procedure with most patients reporting that the improvements last 1-2 years.
What results can you expect?
The results are gradual and vary between patients. Typically you could expect that after three weeks an overall improvement in skin hydration, texture, and tone can be seen. Between three and six weeks, new collagen is made and new blood vessels are formed leading to an overall improvement in skin appearance. Reduction of fine lines and improvements to skin elasticity will continue for several months. The facial rejuvenation benefits are gained by the production of new cells and collagen underneath your skin, which takes some time for your body to make. Please note that results will be dependent upon a number of factors-state of the skin before the therapy and patient adherence to the pre-procedure and post-procedure protocols.
